TCBA

TCBA (Tanzania Capital Boosting Association) is the small company I'm doing my volunteer work with over the next three months. TCBA's three primary objectives are business consulting, micro loans, and a savings program for the working poor. Last week I spent time out in the field visiting with microentrepeneurs who are looking to secure a second loan of $200. Individuals who apply for loans must have an existing business and be part of a group of five who also have existing businesses. The reasoning behind the five people is to insure that if anyone individual defaults on their loan, then the remaining members of the group become responsible for repayment. This type of lending program has been very successful in the developing world with upwards of 85% repayment rates.

My responsibilities will include basic computer training for the staff, meeting with clients and giving them advice on how they might improve their business, creating charters for other potential NGO's, and helping TCBA try to acquire new loans in order to help them grow their business.

There are of course office politics to deal with and it all comes African style meaning slow and inefficient at times. But hey, its Africa!
